Springfield College is a private college located in Springfield, Massachusetts and is known for its association with the YMCA and as the birthplace of basketball.

In October 2017, Springfield College dedicated their new state-of-the-art Harold C. Smith Learning Commons. The Learning Commons was named in honor of Harold C. Smith, a member of the Springfield College Board of Trustees for 31 years who enjoyed a long career with the YMCA Retirement Fund, eventually rising to become its President & CEO and Chief Investment Officer. The college transformed the former Babson Library from a 45-year-old out-of-date library into a modern Learning Commons.

The new Learning Commons “reimagines what it means to study, learn, research, lead, refuel and collaborate on campus” and includes:

  • Classrooms and Conference Rooms – The Davis Center provides a space for librarians and faculty members to provide instruction, The Forum is a state-of-the-art space available for programming with audio hook-ups and flexible space for 60 plus video technology and a green screen to allow students and faculty to record projects; 30 high-tech computers available for student use and a technology-enhanced conference room with video conferencing technology
  • Study Spaces – On the first floor is a 24-hour Study Space accessible by a swipe card system, group study rooms and the Karpovich Reading Room which is a quiet reading and study space dedicated to a former faculty member
  • Academic Services – Academic Services includes an Academic Success Center for tutoring, academic coaching and assistance for students with disabilities, Library Services and information desk for research consultation, and the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Scholarship featuring consultations, workshops and training programs for faculty development and collaboration
  • Building Features – the Commons Café and parenting room is on the first floor, an outdoor scenic patio is situated on the third floor, all-gender restroom facilities are located throughout the building

  • Embedded the technology discussions early in the architectural design process through a visioning project with architect, faculty, staff and students to identify their unique needs
  • Incorporated space management to maximize limited space for The Forum area to serve multiple purposes
  • Designed IP-enabled and programmable security protocols to allow access to a building that is open 24-hours per day
