Network, Telecom, Infrastructure and Data Center Upgrade

SUMMARY

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is a public community college based in La Plata, Maryland and currently serves about 14,000 students across four campuses.

In 2015, the college received funding to upgrade and replace their aging telecom and data infrastructure with a focus on fiscally responsible resiliency, reliability and security and in support of the institutional teaching and learning mission.

They decided to undertake an extensive and complex project to assess, design and procure:

  • A new data network infrastructure, both wired and wireless (core, edge, and WAPs)
  • A new unified communications system including voice services unified messaging, mobility, call center, emergency notification, E-911 location services, audio and video conferencing, and other enhanced communications services for seven interconnected locations
  • Upgrades to power, back-up power and environmental conditions in all IDFs, MDFs, and server rooms
  • A new single mode, multi-strand, self-healing fiber optic campus backbone ring interconnecting all buildings
  • A new data center for the main campus (modular and scalable to meet the College’s needs for the next 10-15 years with minimal down-the-road investment)

CSM retained Vantage to handle all aspects of the project including:

  • Leading the charge for innovation
  • An assessment to establish existing conditions, establish system requirements, and explore costs and options
  • Innovative designs for each system, drawings and specifications and establish a preliminary as-bid cost estimate
  • Coordination for a series of formal procurements (RFPs) to solicit bids for supply, installation, and support of the systems
  • Implementation oversight to provide project management and oversight of the system implementation as it is carried out by the selected vendors.

BENEFITS

  • Coordinated integrated technology procurements to encourage interoperable and complementary solutions
  • Developed cohesive and uniform solutions across all sites to ease management and use
