Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario-CHEO - from Parkin Architects

The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) is a stand-alone pediatric academic hospital and treatment centre in Ottawa, Canada. It has over 100 beds, admits more than 6,900 patients, performs 7,800 surgeries, and treats nearly 169,000 patients to our outpatient clinics, every year. In addition, CHEO has one of the busiest pediatric emergency rooms in Canada, treating more than 75,000 patients a year.

The Champlain Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) asked CHEO to facilitate the development of a ten-year capacity plan for children and youth in the region. Agnew Peckham and Parkin Architects were hired to develop the Master Programming, and Vantage was brought in to provide technology-related input into the project.

Vantage’s work covered three major areas:

  • An assessment of the existing facilities and infrastructure with regard to how the existing components can support the future plans for the CHEO campus
  • A series of recommendations regarding integration of technologies into the next generation of CHEO buildings, including recommendations for physical infrastructure, technology systems and end user applications
  • A Healthcare Technology Visioning Workshop where CHEO stakeholders, including nurses and physicians, staff and family members, discussed ideal “Day in the Life” scenarios and technology use case discussions to determine how technology can provide the most value to the next generation of CHEO facilities

  • Identify the current state of the technology infrastructure on the existing campus and its readiness to support the next generation of healthcare technologies
  • Ensure that technology systems are considered at an early stage in the planning so that appropriate provisions can be made
  • Provide stakeholders with the ability to contribute to the discussion, steer the decision-making based on their in-depth knowledge of CHEO and its culture, and ensure that technology provides value to the hospital and the community it serves
