Grand Valley State University

Cellular Distributed Antenna System (DAS)

Location: Allendale, MI
Client:  Grand Valley State University

Project Description:

Grand Valley State University (GVSU) is a member of the Michigan state university system with the main campus in Allendale and a branch campus in Grand Rapids.  Like most institutions of higher education, the cell phone has taken on an increasingly important role, not only becoming the basis for communications with students and faculty, but also acting as a cornerstone for a University-wide mobility and bring-your-own-device (BYOD) initiative.  However, like most universities, cellular coverage is spotty and varies by carrier and building.  Older stone and masonry buildings, as well as newer LEED certified buildings are virtually impervious to cellular signals.  Vantage was retained by GVSU to determine the nature of the problem, gain University-wide consensus to address it, assist in the procurement process, and select a vendor to provide a solution for both campuses.  Vantage assisted with contract negotiations resulting in an approach that systematically addressed the problem at little or no cost to the university.
